“Please add the name of W. C. Clark and Rusty Wier to musicians supporting Paul Ray and Larry Monroe.  I represent both of these artists and both wish to support your efforts.

Please feel free to use my name in support of “Save KUT Austin.” FYI, I am a music critic and writer, columnist, music historian and author who has lived in and written about Austin for more than 30 years, and listened to KUT the whole time.

“I would like to tell a story about why I will do anything I can to support our friend Larry Monroe.

Mambo_John

On the Sunday night before Mambo John Treanor died, a number of us gathered around him in his hospital room sensing that the end was near. Mambo was slipping in and out of consciousness as a radio tuned to Larry Monroe’s Texas Radio show on KUT played music in the background. Then Larry began to play songs from records that Mambo had played drums and/or washboard on, and a miraculous transformation unfolded before us ….

Suddenly Mambo became alert and began describing details of the recording of each of the songs Larry played. At the same time his hands and feet moved in the bed as if he was playing the drums, remembering every nuance of his many performances. This continued for the better part of the next hour, as a smiling and jubilant Mambo had that final opportunity to relive his incredible musical life.

Larry, your act of kindness is indicative of the impact a free KUT makes in our lives.”

Thanks for the heads-up regarding the attempt to change certain spotlight programs at KUT. The decisions stated in the note certainly seem to feel way out of touch with listener sentiments toward broadcast highlights, namely Paul Ray and Larry Monroe’s splendid talents which, up to now, retain a very special attractive element with listeners and supporters around the globe.

As an anonymous contributor during KUT’s fund raising terms, the value stood firmly in step with the appeal that these special program moments brought the KUT base with each broadcast.

As a traveler between both Texas and California, KUT is a constant companion, beaming in via internet, and when out on the touring trail, once again, KUT served to bring an entirely uplifting and satisfying listening experience, wherever.

The abrupt decision to alter a winning formula seems a perilous move, if not downright abrasive. Recollections are amiss offering participation in any sort of KUT listener’s poll based on KUT’s data base. Arbitron’s reports, as stated, are indeed random and not necessarily KUT listener-accurate. And the notion of dismissing what are personal programming favorites is, well… A “less than”…

Lord have mercy, what will a listener’s motivation be at contribution time…?

Bring ‘em back, amigo. Talents provided by seasoned veterans like Larry and Paul are all too rare these days. Shows as expertly designed and delivered as theirs are certainly a KUT bonus, above all, for listeners.

We stand alongside supporting the immediate restoration of the aforementioned full program schedules as there may be an unsatisfactory abyss during their rightfully assigned hours. Get it on.

Kindest Regards,
Billy G

One reason I moved to Austin in the first place was for the music. The music I enjoyed hearing was on Paul Ray’s and Larry Monroe’s shows. Paul is not only one of the most knowlegable radio personalities being a musician himself but also sharing that knowlege with the large musical audience in the local Austin area and on the internet around the world. He promotes Austin musicians which is one reason musicians are here and able to get recognition without having to relocate to New York or Los Angeles. I was surprised a a bit shocked to hear about them replacing local hosts in favor of turning KUT into another affiliate of the rest of the country and away fromthe unique music we have here. I moved here to be a part of it. Where would I go, back to LA?

Please restore the community’s radio station to the community. Unleash Aielli. Bring back Phil Music and Paul Ray’s Jazz and Femme
FM.

Larry Monroe is the absolute best. He plays exactly what I want to hear, and has taught me so much about Austin’s musical legacy.

Craig Toungate
Please add my name to the musician’s list. I’ve played professionally in Austin for almost 40 yrs, and have appeared many times on KUT’s Eklektikos, Folkways, Live Set programs. I’ve also been a loyal KUT member since 1984. I used to be able to enjoy KUT anytime of the day, whether in my car or at home, there was always good music to listen
to. That’s is not true anymore in my opinion. I find myself turning the station off a lot these days because there is too much of the same style of music, and much of it is bad pop music.

But my main gripe is with the programming of the tunes. Larry Monroe, Paul Ray, John Aielli, and Teresa Ferguson are masters in the flow of great music. The tunes being played now usually sound as if they were put on shuffle instead of a connected well thought out set list. We in Austin love to support our cultural icons – Willie Nelson, Cactus Pryor, Lance Armstrong, etc. Larry and Paul belong to that group, and you don’t take away their programs. You make sure they continue to inspire others, as they have for years. I love “Blue Monday” and “Twine Time”, but they are genre related programs. I really miss the brilliant choices of genre bending music that Larry and Paul played on their now gone shows. If I can’t listen to KUT anymore, why would I continue to support them? I want my “Phil Music”, Paul Ray’s Jazz”, “Texas Radio”, “Segway City”, and “Femme FM” back. KUT has become just another 3 Initial Corporation without them.

Joe Blanda
I miss the KUT I once knew and loved.

Particularly insidious was sneaking the changes in during summer when we are all used to Aielli’s August Break, and I presumed this other guy was some sub for temporary times. Imagine my suprise when I learned he was a “for real” air person. I went to a coffeeshop playingjazz & realized it couldn’t be radio, not in Austin, not now. That’s Sad!
Can I join anyone at the benefit & play violin and/or fiddle?

Shawn Sanders
I am ending my financial support, however meager my contributions, to KUT radio until larry, paul and john’s programs are fuly reinstated. (abbie hoffman once said something to the effect that nothing is quite as effective as a strike.)

For thirty-five years I’ve been an Austin Musician,Recording Artist,Producer, an International Label and Production House owner and a KUT donor, giving twice a year. What Larry Monroe essentially did was to give Austin Musicians airplay at a time when no other Radio Stations or their Managers in Austin would air us. It has been a format that has been copied successfuly by Commercial Radio since. A huge factor in this is that Paul and Larry are getting near retirement age. As part of the U.T. System, U.T. is scaling their hours back so that they can pay fewer Benefits to them and decrease their Pensions. They would have canned them completely except for their popularity They did not expect to see something like this. To really make your voice heard, contact the University of Texas. Human Resource Center: Jim McEloy:Director, Debra Kress: Services, John Moore, Director, Workforce Reward Analysis and William C. Powers, President. Only if you do this enmasse, will UT restore their hours. So, flood their lines and overload their e-mail. If you don’t do this, all of the concerts are well meant and feel good, but will have little effect on UT’s decision. I’ve seen it happen before…

Many were the late nights I sat with my friends at the station back in the 70′s, doing 3:00 am shows… Corp radio is killing the soul of music. Keep the local station local!!!

Isn’t the point of public radio to play music that would not succeed in the market like classical or jazz?

I am a musicians in support of John Aielli. He performs an important role in keeping classical music alive in Austin and has been very effective. Keep him on!

Lysviolin
I am part of the vital Early Music community of Austin and I am astounded that we have been left for dead. John Aielli was a staunch supporter until he was no longer allowed to invite who he wanted on-air or play what he wanted. Even with Aielli Unleashed there was still a chance to get some air time. But, now, it seems the talking heads are winning and Austin listeners are losing. We listen to and support a station that is supposed to listen to and support US! Are we suddenly no good? I don’t think so. I think we are better than ever and more deserving of recognition than ever.

KUT management…cut the crap and bring back Larry, Paul, Teresa, Aielli Unleashed and more time for John. We, the supporters of KUT for years deserve better than to be thought of as some mass of undiscerning ears. We are smart. You be smart.

Hi Gary!

Barbara Grove
I have listened to KUT for many years. Over the last two years , I have faithfully listened, wondering why programming seemed to be drastically changing. I was dismayed when Ekletikos (John Aielli) played less and less classical music. Over the last few months while listening, I’ve wondered about the target audience! Unfortunately, it isn’t me! Except for what is left of Ekletikos and Horizontes, I listen to nothing else and I’m so sad about that! What KUT has contributed to the community’s enjoyment with diverse programming has been lost. I’m sure the bottom line is money.:(

Jeffery Kingore

Please keep me up to date on events. We would be happy to perform in any upcoming events for this cause!

Please don’t take John Aielli’s program off the air. It’s been the best voice for local musicians and artists. I’ve greatly enjoyed listening to and performing on his program.

Larry Monroe and Paul Ray have enriched and enlightened Austin music fans for years. The classic R&B, blues and jazz that they offer help to influence a new generation of musicians. It’s their knowledge and taste that help make KUT the wonderful and diverse resource that it is.

Richard J Dobson
Sign me up… good radio is priceless…

Fire Stewart Vanderwilt we need a change not some change, stop begging. I have been waiting years for this to happen. Stewart has ruined Eklektikos, and almost every show by behind the scenes control what can and cannot be said or played on air. KUT needed to change but not into KGSR-lite. Texas music is being treated like a circus act. Lets take KUT back and make it home grown that is what the rest of the world wants.
