Updates from the field:

Evangeline Café owner and KUT underwriter, Curtis Clarke, recently donated $700 to SaveKUTAustin. Mr. Clark did this in lieu of his usual $500 donation to KUT. Merci, pour tous vos efforts vaillants, Curtis!

SaveKUTAustin is also pleased to report that we recently received a $ 365 donation, the same amount repeatedly promoted on KUT as a $1/day pledge. Thank you to the supporter with a big heart, and a keen sense of humor.

And this beauty, from our friend, Facebook admin, and a true Road Warrior, Todd Jagger: “I did a Marfa Public Radio show today. I was told that at least 4 donations during the fundraiser this week specified “Instead of KUT Membership”.

Due to the situation with KUT Radio and their decisions made this year, I’ve decided to make my charitable contribution this time around to the SaveKUTAustin movement.

We’ve got to let KUT know how they’ve affected OUR radio station! I will not contribute to a cause or organization that I don’t believe in.

First of all – thx for the invitation to comment on yesterday’s new … pre-recorded program “Live in Austin” …  It’s not that it was so awful – but it was just so damn middle of the road. … I don’t mean to offend anyone over there at the station, but it didn’t feel live  – It sounded … impersonal, smooth, corporate – pretty much the
antithesis of all the reasons I listen to KUT.

I’m not arguing that you shouldn’t grow and change. … I welcome change – but I sure do feel like you guys are trying to appeal to a wider audience at the expense of becoming better, more local, more unique and more personal.

Mostly, I have to say again – to anyone who will listen over there – the canned overnight programming is just an awful idea. … I just hate the idea that any of my contributions to the station are going to support national programming like “Undercurrents”.

Paul Ray has given Austin the gift of his jazz expertise and made KUT a forerunner in the US jazz scene. Larry Monroe has expanded the influence of Austin musicians by playing the best music our town has to offer! Don’t cut back on the quality of KUT’s programming and these incredible DJ’s! I Protest!

15“You can help keep KUT local.”

There is something very tragic happening in the Austin music community right now, and I hope you will take a moment to read, understand what’s happening, and find out what you can do about it. Austin’s public radio station, KUT, has always been the most important medium for local musicians to get heard. The station continues to support local music in a way that only a noncommercial station can. But the current management is working towards eliminating quality, local music programming at KUT.

They have instituted a music committee to authorize songs before they are played, and they have reduced the hours of local music programming. With these changes, it makes it that much harder for local musicians to get noticed.

Whether you are a regular listener, or have never heard of KUT, there are three simple, easy things you can do to help. First, tune in to 90.5. Listen to legendary DJs Paul Ray (Saturday 7PM to 11PM) and Larry Monroe (Monday 8PM to 12AM). When you’re listening, ask yourself if this type of programming exists anywhere else. Second, join the Facebook group to show KUT management you care. … Finally, please write the station manager, Stewart Vanderwilt, at svanderwilt@kut.org and tell him how you feel about what’s happenning.

Really miss the Phil Music show. If I wanted KGSR… I’d tune to KGSR.

I thought this was Austin.

Further changes in the KUT lineup, in particular John Ailelli, would be a huge mistake. The station is becoming a commercial clone, and doesn’t even resemble other good community radio stations in other markets.

KUT isn’t my station anymore. Guess I don’t have to pay for it now, right? Cut the talking head act and give us Paul, Phil, John and Theresa instead of non-Austin pablum.

we used to sponsor shows on kut that will never happen again unless kut recommitts itself to serving the needs of austin

I can’t imagine my home Austin without my guys on KUT, in particular Larry, Paul, and John.

As Paul and Larry are nearing retirement, U.T. is cutting back their hours so that do not have to pay any more benefits than they have to. Contact the University of Texas Human Resourse Center and President William C. Powers if you really want to save Paul and Larry’s jobs and have your voice heard. This is the only thing that will work in regard to U.T.’s overturning their decision.

I am so proud of all Y’all savekutaustin.com supporters! Our strength is our unified voice and the love we share of music and the extraordinary local KUT programming we have enjoyed for so many years.

As a local business owner of The Peace Peddler at www.peacepeddler.com I have enjoyed being a business supporter of KUT since I launched my peace gift webstore in 2007. When I found out about the KUT programming changes I called the station and expressed my dismay, stating that if they would not consider the opinions about programming from listeners and business supporters that I would consider canceling this year’s financial support. I was pretty surprised when Stuart replied that he would have someone call me to take care of discontinuing my monthly donation installments. And he did. He seemed totally disinterested in my thoughts and concerns about the changes which made me feel that our ‘listener supported radio’ has turned into a ‘cater to the corporate $$ radio.’

Let’s do all we can to support Save KUT Austin! I hope to see Y’all at the Twang Dang event.
